Paintjob & gear box questions

Hi guys. I am at the stage where I have to paint my AWO.
I will not use any professional help for the paintjob - I want to do it myself..
Can you give me any practical tips on how to do the gold and white stripes on the sides of the tank and on the fenders?
Anyone who has done this at home?

Also, when you pull the clutch lever, its cable pulls a small lever on the back of the garbox.
On my AWO this gearbox lever moves for only 1 or 2 centimeters. This in turn, makes the clutch lever on the handlebar very hard to squeeze and with a very limited motion.
Is this normal?

Hi Man,

regarding you paintjob, you can first paint the basic color eg. black and then use a brush( not air brush, but hair brush ) That are special hair brush with long hair like a ponytail. You just paint the gold stripes.

Now comes what I would do in you situation. First air brush(not hair brush ) the stripes in you lovely color and then use 3M Tape like this to protect them.

Now brush the rest of the part. After all is dry remove the tape. Use abrasive paper (we call it sand paper) very fine with granulation 1000 or 2000 and remove carefully the edging from the stripes.

Next step brush clear (transparent) paint over the whole surface. If you have some smal dust (nib) in the last paint you can use again sand paper and remove them.

Last is the paint finish now use some polishing and make a shine surface.

the subject line has already blue states.

Your problem is not really a problem with the clutch.
should be the pull of the clutch lever on the gearbox, not separate but the clutch, then simply adjust the adjustment screw on that lever.

a question from me you have not yet been answered.

May be you could do the basic paint job yourself, but the pin-striping is a hard task, also for professionals.

So it would be better to collect some original AWO pictures (to see the original pin-strip pattern) and let the job do a pro.

OK, I have browsed through many AWO photos and the stripes on those bikes looked slightly different from one another.
Some were narrower, others were wider, some had a slightly different placement on the tank/fender. Some even had silver stripes instead of gold.

My guess is that the striping was different on the different batches of bikes.
Maybe the batch of bikes from 1953 had different stripes than the BJ 1959 batch?
Or maybe those photos I have seen were all of newly painted bikes, thus the slight differences in the stripes?

What would be the most appropriate AWO-Touren photo to use as a reference? Do you guys have one?
