Vergaser Problem?
Hallo, I think that I have a problem with the carburetor on my AWO-Touren (BJ 1956).
I did some repairs on the engine and I was able to kick-start my bike for the first time after I bought it.
But it only works if I remove the spark plug and pour gasoline in the cylinder through the spark plug's opening.
If I try to ignite the motorcycle the normal way (with a carburetor), the engine doesn't start.
So, if it works without a carburetor but doesn't work with a carburetor installed, then it must be something in the carburetor that is causing the problem.
I started fiddling around with the carb and I noticed a few strange (to me) things.
1. I can not pull the float out of the float chamber. It is like anchored on its bottom end and just stays in. Is this normal?
2. The anchored float moves up and down in an interval of only 5 or 6 milimeters. Is this normal?
Danke!

hello BikerWannabe,
therefore, the illustrated carburetor is not yours?
these include an awo s - not awo t.
of swimmers is attached by a wire spring on the needle. The needle is pushed out to bottom (before bolting to open).
the hub of the needle swimmers from 5-6mm is ok.
best regards uwe

Re: Vergaser Problem?
Hello there!
The carburetor shown on the picture is one for the "AWO Sport" (with downdraft Inlet), with adjustable float-camber.
On a "Touren" you should have the "rigid-floatchamber-type". But anyway, it should work (more or less).
From here I can not exacly tell the float-travel (I have to measure this evening), but 5-6 mm seem a little bit less to me. The travel should be approximately 8-10 mm, but I´m not shure now.
It is ok when the float dont come out: It is secured in a groove on the floatneedle. If you screw off the cap on the bottom of the floatchamber, you can push (carefully!) the needle down; it comes out downward. Than the float is free to be taken off the chamber.
I think you have the problem that no or not enough fuel is coming to or through the carb. Check if the float is correctly seated in the groove on the floatneedle. Check also if the float and needle is moving freely.
Should I really say it?
Check if enough fuel is coming from the tap, check also EVERY bore and jet in the carb is free and not blocked with dirt or a uncorrect seated gasket.
Do you have any informations about AWOs? You should have at least the Riders Manual (it is almost like a Workshop Manual), the best thing to have is the so-called "Werner-Bible", a commented reprint of the origin Manuals and Part-Lists. A little bit knowledge of the german language would be usefull...
Cheers, and don´t mind if there some faults, my scool-english is a little bit rusty...

Re: Vergaser Problem?
Hallo krachbumm425 and Uli, thank you for your answer.
You think that my carburetor is from AWO-Sport?
Hmmmm, this is strange. I think that AWO-Sport carburetors are slanted. Mine is not, though.
I thought that it was a regular AWO-Touren carburetor.
Uli, I have an AWO-Touren mnual in German, very detailed. Unfortunately, my skills in German are close to non-existent. I also have a maual in my own language. less detailed but still useful in many aspects.
I will try to take off the float the way you advised me.
I also suspect that no fuel is getting in the cylinder. Maybe the carburetor is choked by dirt indeed.
By the way, it looks like the float chamber could be moved to the other side of the carburetor.
Is this possible or am I mistaken?
I tried to unscrew the nut that sits between the float chamber and the carb's body and it was IMPOSSIBLE to move it for more than 1/8 of one full spin. It is so tight.

Re: Vergaser Problem?
Hi Biker Wannabee
This Carb can,t work correct on your Bike, order a originial Touren Awo Carb on Ebay or here. The different is the Gasoline-Chamber ( is on Touring Modell fix mounted) an the distance between the Holddown Bolts. The Inside Diameter is on your Carb 26,5 mm and for Touring 24 mm.
How came this Bike in the States ?????????????
Have a nice Day

Re: Vergaser Problem?
Hi dellorto42, you are absolutely right, man.
I just measured it - the carb has an opening of 26 milimeters. Damn...
By the way, I opened the carb and its main nozzle was full of dirt - looks like a mixture of dissolved iron rust and mud.
It is just jammed.
This whole thing is very interesting!
The previous owner (who is an old man) has used this carb on the bike for years. Maybe, if I clean it properly, it will work again.
Meanwhile I will be looking for an original Touren carburetor or a suitable substitute.
PS:
The bike is here, in Europe.
It is me that sometimes resides in New York.

Cleaning the carb is one of the first things to do when you want to get a long time unused bike back to life.
But for real proper performance use a Touren-carb on a Touren-engine.
I think here you will get what you need: http://www.mz-bk350-teile.de/
Good luck!

Re: Vergaser Problem?
Thanks, I cleaned the carb. Will check if it works tomorrow.
I hope that the difference of 1,5 mm in the diameter of the opening will not give me too much trouble. After all, the bike has been using this carb for years.
Of course, I will buy a new carb - one coming from an AWO Touren or from a MZ Trophy.
By the way, the rear saddle on my bike has a brass IFA logo with a seagull. Is this a common thing?

Re: Vergaser Problem?
hello bikerwannabe,
Only the swimmers from the chamber is sport.
The carburetor itself is touring.
It is possible that the fact that fuel level is incorrect.
But you could adjust this by moving the needle floating on the swimmers.
The swimmers housing can be pivoted on the left side.
tours on-carburetor is located there, but sometimes the idle adjustment screw.
if they can not solve the lower screw was glued them. this was done because the thread is very sensitive and was probably broken already.
it should still be good, please fix them with feeling!
best regards
