Hi, I want to use an MZ carburetor on my AWO.
Will this work?

Also, is there a way to substitute the original AWO magnetto with a magnetto from some other brand of East European motrocycle?

The Carb from the MZ TS150 (24N1-1) fill work fine, as it does on mine since years. You will have to make your own flange.
I dont know any other european magneto which will fit AWO. Better use an original magneto or convert it to a battery-coil-ignition.

First, good to hear that legendary AWO has fans abroad.

Carburettor:
I also have had such MZ carburettor on my AWO when I bought the bike some years before.
Even more, I couldn’t really recognize a different when I had the original one installed.
It is possibly just a personal feeling, but with the AWO carburettor I like my AWO much more. :-)
You must know that year before MZ-bikers and AWO-biker where not always friendly to each other. Both were form another world in our country (and it was even a little politilal). So some of the eastern boys do not really like MZ parts on AWOs - but even worse might be parts from Poland Czech Republic. Take it easy.

Magneto:
The MZ uses another system than AWO uses to make the sparks work.
MZ´s uses a coil (I think it is attached at the front face of the generator) and a spark coil.
However, the MZ generator fits perfect at the AWO position and this MZ generator has 60W instead of 45W the AWO generator has. That is the reason than some AWO-riders use the MZ generator.

For the magneto "Zündmagnet" you should use the AWO part. As described above MZ uses a spark coil and has not a magneto. I personally advise that the magneto should be re-worked when this is not done with yours.
There are other possibilities like electronic devices and users feel very happy with these "elekronische Zündung"
But I drive my AWO, due to I am an Oldtimer-fan and I will not replace my magneto by a modern electronic part before I do not see any possibility to keep the old technique alive.

@61xlch, thanks man, I was thinking TS or ES 150 too!
The 150 ES has a 24 mm opening on its carb and according to my calipers, the AWO uses a 24mm opening too.

@awo-junkie , yep, I have heard that the very first Polish Junaks used an AWO magneto. It is basically the same magneto as on the AWO.
The Polish imported those magnetos from East Germany as they were unable to manufacture them in the very beginning. Then they started manufacturing their own ignition systems, I believe.
Finding a magneto from a Junak here is a hard task, though. It is even harder to find an Junak than to dig up an original AWO. We never imported any Junaks, I believe.
I am thinking of adopting an IZH ignition system but this will require some cutting of the lid. And this sucks.

I am very interested in those electronic ignition systems that were mentioned by EISENHAMMER.
I hear that you can take one from a Trabant (some newer models have them) and adopt it. But this is as far as my knowledge on electronic systems goes.

This bike was built by some amateur. Not a fine piece of art, indeed.
But I am interested in that thing this bike has attached to the engine.
Is this a tractor magneto (some people here use magnettos from the starter engine of a UMZ Belarus tractor on their AWOs)?
Or even more: is this an AWO engine?

...no.the engine looks like BMW R24 or R25. The bike is pretty cool piece of shit, I like it.

If you are going to use the old 6V- MZ generator, it will be pretty easy to convert it to a battery-coil-ignition. This will be a simple and cheap way to ride on. I this case watch your battery, especially in short run use.
(Dont care about the political thoughts in the past in East Germany )

Where do you come from? Smells like Russia or former USSR?

I have a huge pile of AWO parts that I would like to turn into a working motrocycle. The pile includes two engines, three gear boxes, two frames, etc.
At first I wanted to get rid of all the parts and sell them but then I saw a guy riding a cool loking AWO and I reconsidered: I want a bloody AWO and I want it now.
Problem is that I don't have all the parts that I need. I don't have a carb, I don't have a magneto, I don't have a dynamo (not that I need a dynamo at this stage).

I want to make at least one of the engines work so to be able to check it for mechanical problems. For this, I will be needing SOME kind of ignition system.
The one with a battery seems to be a good solution. I will try to figure out how to use one on my AWO.

Engine, carb, aircleaner and gearbox are EMW R35/3.

Very funny bike, if you combine an EMW engine and a AWO cardan, you will go 4 speed in reverse, because the AWO-cardan runs in the opposite direktion then the EMWs.

EMW bikes are very rare here. Too bad this guy ruined one of them to build his not so pretty bobber.

I have an idea. Can I use a magneto from a Husqvarna or a Stihl chainsaw engine on my AWO?
Or will this not work?
